Calamari - Kikkoman Kara-Age Review

I love calamari although I have never made any at home.  It's always been more of a treat type of dish that is ordered when I am out to dinner somewhere.  As part of the Tastemaker program through Foodbuzz, I was able to try out the Kikkoman Kara-Age Soy-Ginger Coating Mix.  This mix was super easy to use and had a wonderful flavor.  I literally just had to buy the calamari and fry it up, and my family loved it.  I was lucky that I got to try a piece before it was all gone.  This was calamari made easy, and I will definitely be buying this product in the future.

Here is a link to the Kikkoman product I used.

Calamari
Ingredients:

  • 1 box Kikkoman Kara-Age Soy-Ginger Coating Mix (I used both packages inside)
  • 1 pound fresh calamari, cleaned and cut into pieces
  • oil for frying

Directions:
Heat oil in a fry pan on medium high until very hot.  Add Calamari in batches into the Kara-Age mix and shake to coat evenly.  Then add to hot oil cooking in batches as well (do not over-crowd the pan).  Cook for just a few minutes, then remove onto a plate lined with paper towels.  Repeat with remaining calamari until it is all cooked.  Then try to share and not eat it all yourself. :)

If you make it totally go to whole foods for the calamari. I got mine there it was already cleaned and all I had to do was cut it. I love whole foods they make my life easy. :)

  13. My friends keep trying to get my to try fried calamari. But I can't stand any kind of rubbery or chewy texture (other than fried clams) so I am still on the fence.

    Yours looked very tempting 'tho...

  15. Calamari rocks! Especially when it's done properly (a.k.a. not so squeeky and rubbery that it's like chewing erasers!) :-)
